Introduction to editing
Editing is the process where a piece of media is corrected or revised in order to produce a final piece. Editing allows video footage to be put in to desired places to create a final movie and T.v series. There are two key areas that editing focuses on. Speed editing is concerned with how long the shot lasts for. Style of editing is concerned with how the shots are joined together.
Speed editing
Some scenes last long then others. With speed editing you can determine moods and emotions through what's happening on screen. For example, in an action film there will quick scenes to show fast pace. This is seen in the film such as "Bourne Ultimatum" or "Transporter". Lengths of clips will determine the pace of the film or scene.
Romantic movies such as "sleepless in Seattle" have longer seconds in a clip for a reason. This is because the movie needs a relaxed romantic mood. The editors would do this by making clips in the film longer. By less frequently changing the clip the audience can make connections between the character creating that cliché warm feeling to the movie

This YouTube clip is from "Transporter 3" which shows the fight scene in the mechanics. Compared to the first example of the romantic film there is clear difference between the clips. Since this is an action clip there is more shorter clips making the scene like fast paced. This leaves the audience of the edge of their seats.
Style of editing
Style of editing involves how each shot to shot is put together or linked together. The movement from one shot to another is called a transition.
Straight cut
The most common transition is called straight cut. This is when the shot goes to the next without the audience being aware. It helps retain the reality of life in the film and holds suspense for the audience
Dissolve shot is when the initial shot fades to another shot. Most film makers will use this shot to show connection between two characters. In this example you can see the connection between the man and the women
This is a wipe shot. As you can see the old shot is being replaced by an new shot that is arising from the top. Its called a wipe shot as it wipes the other shot off the screen. In the example Star Wars it used to show passing of time
This is a jump cut. This shot breaks continuity editing. This is because its an abrupt change in shot to bring the audience attention to something else.
