misc en scene in Psycho

Psycho
Marion in  the motel

When Marion stood in that room ranting you can easily identify the objects in the room. One area of misc en scene is props. The props are used in an innovate way to portray to the audience true character of Marion. The birds of prey should the alter ego of Marion. It shows how the birds prey on their food Marion prays on the young lady.

The owl is a nocturnal animal, meaning it only preys at night. The owl being the most obvious could mean the director wanted to show the audience that the alter ego of Marion was to be most prominent at night.

Furthermore, the candle that was in the middle ground is not lit up. This can represent the 'cold' atmosphere in the office and this an indication of the tension between the two characters.

Title sequences

Pink Panther

The production company is the Mirisch company presents a Blake Edwards production - The Pink Panther. The titles to this movie is presented in intercut shots. The order of how the titles are presented are of a normal movie. The production company comes first following a series of the main actors. Then finally comes the movie name in big letters. The last people to be shown were the producers and director.

This title is a real good example of how a movie intertwines themes of the movie within the actual title. For example, the colours used show the link to the Pink Panther. The text looks cartoony and informal showing that it is an animation. From the start you can see a very comical Panther, who is the main character. You can get clues about what the movie will be about from the title. There is a little man who looks like a detective trying to find the Panther. This could show that the movie can be a mystery theme film. Overall the film from the title attracts the audience well and as an animation it looks fun and exciting to watch.

Art of the Title

Art of the Title

This website was a great source of information on how title sequences are put together. The website was graphically well laid out and consisted of great illustrations. It gives us information on how each title sequence was made- (all the people who made the title sequence give their own comments of how they conducted the music, animated movements and many more).
Website lay out

Star Wars
A very unique title sequences that  interest me is the title sequence from star wars. This unique as the moving text slides upwards different from any other film. It can represent how slow time everything moves up in space as thats where the film is supposed to be set. The font is clear and easy to read. It is big bold and moves slow. This so the audience can pay attention to the opening lines.

The next title sequence is from the movie spectre. This is a James bond movie which could indicate it ould taker factors from other bond title sequences. This could be things such as the calm soothing music the accompanies the title sequence. There is many attempts to evoke motion out of the audience through props and fire. The titles have a fixation on octopuses which could be a metaphor for a clue in the storyline of the movie.

3 initial ideas for Thriller Opening

3 initial ideas for Thriller Opening

We had 3 thriller ideas these included a mafia thriller, action thriller and comedy thriller

1. Mafia styled thriller

This is an idea where we had an idea of two rival mafias. When these two mafias meet it doesn't go down very well. The story entails a exchange of a bag. When the exchange doesn't go to plan the rivals go at each other.

2. Action thriller

This idea has two people in the car, who search around the urban estate for any trouble. When they come across a rival enemy they get out to start a chase. There is a small fight scene in the alleyways to create action. The enemy retreats back to home territory and is able to get help. One of the rival gang members betrays the other leaving him all on his own. The thriller stops there

3.  Comedy thriller

Third idea is a comedy thriller where there are three friends just having fun on the streets and they they go in a car and start driving around and just having fun they crack jokes mess about with each other and everything goes really well until suddenly there is a car crash and everyone is badly hurt.

Location sheet

Location Visit Sheet

Programme Title: Hunter Hunted
Client:
Writer: Altin,Eric and arbaz
Producer: Josh Byrne
Director: Arbaaz
Date:

We took this when out doing some field research on where to film. This area was perfect for our location as it had the tower block and alleyways we needed

Tower block

Access to location via:
driving distance from school

Name and number of location contact: The area is called heath park it is in Dagenham, London

Health and Safety Issues to note: The health and safety issues are that there could be people that do not want to be filmed or have the flat being filmed. We don't want to invade anyone's privacy. Also we will be carrying around baseball bats so we need to be careful as they can inflict harm.

Potential Filming Problems : If we are filming and something happens to the camera we will not be able to film also if the weather changes and rains to hard for example we wouldn't be able to film. If someone does not have the same clothes as they did in previous shots then that can be a filming problem.

Camera Techniques evaluation

Evaluation

I believe that our attempt to recreate different shots went really well. We tried from the easiest to most difficult shots. Our most successful shots consisted of those where you didn't need specialist equipment for example, the medium and close up shots.

We experienced some difficulties with the moving shots as we didn't have the equipment. We only had a basic tripod. For example when we were performing the tilting technique. As the camera was tilted, it looked a bit shaky and it was supposed to move smoothly. The tilting technique was a little hard to shoot as the camera man has to keep the camera steady. Also, the camera tilted to the left side- it would've been better if the camera was tilted to the right side as well in order for us to see how the image looked on both sides.

Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the product ?

In the preliminary task, were given a list of camera shots that you can use effectively to make a good thriller opening. In the completed thriller, we were using these techniques more innovatively to build an opening to a thriller.

This is our shot reverse shot

During the progression from the preliminary task to the completed thriller, I have learnt how to demonstrate Match-on-action, 180 Degree Rule, Shot/Reverse shot, Eyeline Match and we had performed some of these techniques successfully. I have also learnt how each of these shots generally make the thriller more interesting and engaging for the audience to watch.

From there we went on to adapting the shot so that it suited to our thriller and its needs

So, in our thriller it wasnt effective to do shoulder to shoulder in a moving car. It wouldn't work. So we made a progression where you can see both shoulders in the car and still listen to the convo that is happening. Facial expressions can also be interpreted.
The skills i gained was that i was able to know what would work well in different shots and what did thats why we took many shots just in case so when we looked at the editing we picked out the best angles and what worked well with the film.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

The way our thriller holds the audience is that we keep the action in the thriller constant from the McGuffin to the chase scene right till the end of the movie. The end scene was cut which left the audience on the edge of their seats. No information about the characters is given away so it leaves the audiences asking questions.

At the end of our film we had a cliffhanger. This in itself was a great way for the audience to come watch our movie as the end generates a lot of questions. Like why would Altin do that. At the end there was a gunshot to scare/excite the audience. It also could tell the audience that Arbaaz got shot without it being on the screen.

We attract our audience through age. Our actors of our thriller are of the same age range of our target audience. They can relate to their emotions more. It adds to the stereo type that young people are mischievous. These kind of thrillers attract audience as the same type of actors from Kidulthood made a successful movie.

All the continuous actions keeps the audience attracted to the thriller. It leaves them on the edge of their seat. If we was to release a trailer we would include upbeat grime music with the action scenes

Misc En Scene and evaluation.

In this practical we try to show misc en scene. misc en scene is what is on the immediate screen. This includes things such as settings, props, lighting, or facial expression and body language.

we tried to portray these 4 emotions anger, embarrassment, relaxation and fright.

Anger

With anger we tried to portray frustration by Tyrell pulling his hair. When people are angry they show a range of emotion even tears. Peoples behaviour change when they are angry.

Embarrassment

when people are embarrassed they true to hide their face and avoid any eye contact. They use their hands to cover themselves up as shown by Eric and they also shake their head in disapproval

Fright

Fright can be shown through hand movement and body language. When people are frightened they hide from their fears. They also they use heir hands to cover their face.

Relaxation

when people are relaxed they have a really easy going posture. They are not stiff bodied or tensed up. Props that could be associated with this body language is a chair, bed, mattress, sofa etc. This body language/ facial expression is represented by Arbaaz in the final recording.

Analyzing opening of thrillers

Analysing opening to thrillers
In class we watched 4 opening to thrillers. The most interesting opening to thriller were history of violence, no country for old men and brick.

History of violence

communication towards the audience : when the opening scenes are taking place there is a scene that shows blood on the counter this shows how a very bad thing has taken place. It also creeps the audience out and leaves the wondering what happened before. To add more effect there is suspenseful music which creates a tense and suspicious atmosphere about the two men in the motel.

Blood on the counter

Misc en scene :

One of the distinctive things about misc en scene in the opening is the costumes the actors are wearing. One of the actors wears a quite regular outfit. White t shirt and blue jeans , which could represent the regularity of this man. It could tell us that he is innocent in a way as well. On the other hand the other character is wearing an all black suit. Black shows a sense of darkness about the character.
costume of the characters
No country for old men

sound: In this opening scene there is a man voice over. This man has a southern accent showing his regional identity. The man also has a deep voice to show a hint of sinister feeling in the pitch of his voice. Also when the sheriff was being strangled there was no music but only the sound of his struggling. This can really make the audience feel sympathetic towards him.

Misc en scene : The man who attacked the police officer was wearing all black. This is similar to the first thriller where the villain was also wearing black. The body language coming from him was quite eery and awkward telling the audience that this guy is bad news.

A POV shot was used on a car showing the police car following it. This is effective as it shows that the person in the police car (villain disguised as a police officer/sheriff) is very focused on that car he is chasing. It shows a clearer view of the car being chased. Also after the scene where the sheriff was attacked, there was a close up of the oxygen tank the attacker grabbed- which gives keeps the audience suspenseful onto what he is going to do with it.

Brick

Camera shots: Every facial expression and detail has been portrayed through the close up shots. v To the audience this makes them feel emotional and it could be uncomfortable to watch.

The close up of the face here shows sense of loneliness and the way his hands are placed shows restriction and shows a thinking position.

Screening

Screening

This is the screening of our thriller to the class.

Our screening of our thriller was successful. Some classmates praised the thriller and the efforts put in. The audience feedback from this screening was positive.

Audience Feedback on Completed Thriller

Audience Feedback on Completed Thriller

In regards to personal opinion of our thriller it went really well and was great fun to shoot. We played our thriller to our class mate and this is what they though of it:

Firstly the audience thought that the establishing shot in the introduction was good in setting the scene and mood. They also hinted that the use of the mcguffin was used very well.

When the audience discussed camera and angle shots of the thriller the pointed out many positives. One of the positives was the the low angle shot of the boot showing me and Altin getting the baseball bats out. This really went down well with the audience because it was a quick paced shot. It was said to be a creative shot. The audience liked the chase scenes and moreover the close up of my face.

The audience then moved on to discuss sound in the thriller. They felt as if the sound effects such as the car screeching to a a halt was great emphasis of abrupt action. The gunshot at the end tells the audience what happened after but could not see it on the screen.

The betrayal of Altin went down well with the audience because it was unexpected. This combined with the gunshot ending created a great cliffhanger end to the film.

Analysis of the Rough Cut

Analysis of the Rough Cut

When looking at the rough cut we realised due to additional advise from peers that the typography on the titles had to be changed. We want the gradient, size and colour to match our thriller and the story line.

We also realised that sound on the idents and sound on the actual thriller had to be different. This was because the ident was separate from the movie.

We aim to get the action going and get the last bit of the thriller filmed. We also want to include more characters at the end to create a more gang influenced movie. These are the encompassing ideas to our urban thriller.

Our rough cut was a good indication of how are real thriller is going to pan out. As a group i think that we can adjust a few things and get a really good opening of the thriller. This can be done by going in the same direction we are going. We need to ensure to keep to the thriller genre and keep it professional.

Audience feedback on the Rough Cut

Audience feedback on the Rough Cut

When showing the audience our rough the cut they came up wit had few ideas to improve and make the final thriller as effective as possible . This rough cut was shown to my media class.

Firstly the audience said that the ident for our thriller was good however we need to change the music so that the ident music is separate to the thrillers.

Secondly the audience said that the typography of the film was unprofessional. It was advised to use a simple and timeless font. Also we had to consider the colour of the text and how that would portray our film. We came to the conclusion that simple is more effective. In between the ident and the titles there should be a transition. One of our peers said that we should consider how much space the text takes up on the frame.

The positives were that all of our camera shots were really good and that we use sound effects and music effectively.

Graphic Match

Graphic Match

Graphic match or known as a match cut is editing between two different objects. It can help connect disconnected scenes. It can also establish relationship between two objects. By combing same composition and size with a smooth transition you can make a really good graphic match.

This is an example from the movie psycho. The clip shows a good example of a graphic match. Where the film maker uses the water going down the drain hole to connect the victims eye. It could show the victims life being drained away. As the camera moves closer to the whole the transition takes place to the iris of the victims eye.
